By Dr Anton Van Heerdan MBChB FRANZCO There are a variety of issues that should be considered when recommending the use of prophylactic antibiotics to minimise the risk of endophthalmitis following cataract surgery. Anton Van Heerden will discuss the modes of administration of antibiotics before, during and after cataract surgery to minimise the risk of postoperative endophthalmitis. Anton will explain the criteria for selecting appropriate perioperative topical antibiotics and the dosage of the medication. He will proceed to discuss the safety and efficacy of intracameral (IC) antibiotics during cataract surgery for reducing endophthalmitis after surgery.
